Deja Vu All Over Again

Deja Vu All Over Again

By Kenneth Piper

Virginia bowhunter is having a season for the ages.

If Christian Howes had stopped hunting on Aug. 24, he already would have had a great season.

Traveling to Tennessee from his home state of Virginia to catch one of the earliest bow openers in the country, Christian shot an impressive 13-pointer on the 23rd.

His Tennessee buck scored 178 2/8, but it’s the super thick beams and their unique downward bend toward the end that make it one of the coolest bucks we’ve seen in an already history-making kind of start to the 2024-25 season.

Buckmasters master scorer Dale Weddle is writing an article about that hunt for a future issue of Buckmasters magazine, but it looks like he’s going to have to make some additions.

Although we don’t yet have a BTR score for it, Christian recently shot an even bigger buck in his home state of Virginia.

If that all sounds too easy, think again. Christian’s success comes from a lot of hard work and dedication. He works hard to identify small properties that might hold big deer, and then he tries to get permission to hunt those properties. Despite getting turned down time after time, he doesn’t let it get him down. “All it takes is one yes,” he says.

And that’s exactly how he got permission to hunt the buck he would come to call Garfield. After getting 15 straight “no” responses when asking permission, door number 16 was the one yes Christian needed.

The big 12-pointer will push his year-to-date antler inch total to somewhere around 360 inches — and he’s not done hunting yet!
