228” on KS Public Land
By Patrick Dunning
Buckmasters scorer Kenneth Forbus harvested Kansas’ fourth largest whitetail in BTR’s crossbow category on public land last month, thanks to some effective scouting and a strong west wind.
The mainframe 7x7 holds 197 inches of bone before any irregular points were tallied and 31 scorable points in total. Kenneth measured his own buck while fellow scorer Terry Rethman offered a second set of eyes.
The specimen tipped BTR’s scales at 228 2/8 inches.
“We had a good front come through the day I killed him. I walked in a mile and snuck into the area I’d seen him the most and was on my knees in some prairie grass between food and bedding,” Kenneth told Buckmasters. “I’d been there about an hour and my knees had gotten stiff so I looked down for maybe four seconds, adjusted them, look up and he’s broadside at 30 yards.”
The full story of Kenneth’s 2023 public-ground bruiser from northeast Kansas will be featured in a future issue of Buckmasters magazine.
