How one trail camera photo turned a meat hunter into a trophy chaser.
Meat hunter. It’s a label we all should wear proudly considering the whole idea of shooting deer began with a need for food.
Lean, hormone-free protein remains one of the best reasons to hunt whitetails, but who doesn’t like to claim a nice set of antlers now and then? Have you ever heard a self-proclaimed meat hunter pass on a buck because its rack was too big? Me either.
Case in point is New York’s Phillip Pless who, until seeing a giant buck on his trail cameras in the summer of 2020, was more concerned with backstraps than taxidermy poses.
The giant buck changed Phillip’s priorities, and he began passing up other deer. He also practiced more with his bow, even changing his setup to extend his effective range.
All the hard work and patience paid off in early November, and his 221-inch bruiser set the entire New York deer-hunting community on its collective backside.
Details on the New York buck that would make news in Iowa, Kansas or Illinois will be in the winter issue of Rack.
