Fifteen-year-old Levi Pettit might not remember what any of his teachers said on Nov. 4, 2019, but he’ll never forget what happened AFTER he stepped off the school bus that Monday.
Levi goes to Piketon Junior/Senior High School in Pike County, Ohio, which is on the West Virginia side of the state. When the bus doors folded open, he sped into his home, put on his camo, grabbed his crossbow, and went across the road to an 18-foot-high ladder stand.
“It’s set back in the woods about 50 yards from a wide power transmission line that crosses my family’s property,” he told Ed Waite, who’s writing the story for Rack magazine. “I can watch several well used deer trails and keep an eye on the power line.”
Anxious to liven things up, Levi blew his deer call about 5:00. Five minutes later, he heard something behind him and turned to see a buck approaching.
“It was raking the saplings and brush, bristling for a fight,” the boy said. It was familiar, too.
Locals had been aware of the deer with the foot-long brow tines for at least four years.
When the buck he’d been hunting for so long came to within 30 yards, Levi shot it. The fatally hit deer doubled the distance between them, and then it stopped to look back at what must’ve gored it.
Minutes later, it collapsed.
The 4x6 rack scores 161 4/8 on the BTR scale. Its brow tines measure 12 5/8 and 12 6/8 inches.
