Turn your hunting clothes into a high-powered scent elimination suit.
Get and keep your clothes as scent free as possible to increase your chances of success
Many hunters think of scent control as something that happens right before stepping into the woods. They spray down clothing, check the wind, and head to their stand. While those actions are important, effective scent control begins much earlier and continues long after the hunt is over.
Human odor is not limited to one source. It comes from the body, clothing, equipment, vehicles, storage areas, and even the routes hunters use to access their hunting locations. Because scent originates from so many places, successful odor management requires a complete approach.
Preparation starts at home before the season even starts. Great care should be taken with a scent elimination regimen involving clothing, boots and other fabric items and accessories. And when we talk about clothing, we’re not just talking about the camo or blaze orange worn on the outside, we’re talking about everything you’re going to possibly wear while hunting from your base layers all the way out to our outer layers, boots, hats, gloves, etc.
You want to start with a clean slate. Use a scent-free hunting laundry detergent to wash soil and odors out of your clothes. Wildlife Research Center® Scent Killer® Gold® Laundry Detergent with Power Boost Plus+™ is available in both liquid and ultra-concentrated strips. These deep-cleaning, odor-fighting formulas aggressively fight odors at the molecular level. You may even want to pretreat your washing machine with these by running a load of towels or ordinary clothes before you wash your hunting clothes, to help remove odors or perfumes used in your regular laundry detergents.
Drying your clothes outside away from unnatural orders is usually the best. If using a dryer, Scent Killer® Gold® Dryer Sheets in either unscented or Autumn Formula are a great addition to your clothes cleaning regimen. They help prevent static buildup from attracting lint and hair that may contain odors and soften clothes to help keep them quiet.
The final and perhaps most important step is using a scent elimination clothing spray such as Scent Killer® Gold® with Hunt Dry® Technology Plus. This uses a specialized blend of advanced odor fighting ingredients to attack a wide range of odors – most importantly human odor. It has been found to be 99% effective at stopping replicated human odor – 20 days after drying – in testing at Rutgers University. It works for days after drying and allows you to pre-treat your clothes and store them for days or even weeks before the hunt.
Spray your clothes liberally to fully wet them. Let them fully dry. Then store them in an airtight bag or tote until your next.
