Scent elimination strategies are key to helping a hunter go undetected by big game animals, but no matter how hard you try you can never be absolutely 100% odor free. That is where cover scents can be a good strategy to help cover any gaps.
Experienced hunters know cover scents work best as part of an overall scent elimination plan, and the biggest key is choosing a smell that fits the place you hunt. Pine makes sense in evergreen cover and conifer edges. Earth shines most anywhere, and especially around scrapes, hardwood bottoms and fall forest floors. When your cover scent matches the environment, it adds one more layer of confidence when deer get downwind. Natural scents are most effective when they smell like something deer already encounter.
- Match the habitat: Use pine in cedar swamps, conifer edges and thick evergreens; use earth in hardwoods, scrape zones and leaf-covered timber – pretty much anywhere.
