Tag Team For Turkeys

Tag Team For Turkeys

By Ken Piper

When I first started editing hunting articles, one of the first stories I had the pleasure of working on was about a father and son who teamed up to take a stubborn old gobbler on the last day of the West Virginia turkey season.

Both had hunted the bird independently over the course of the season, but work and school had kept them from hunting together -- until that last day. The hunters had noticed a common thread to their tales of this wily bird: while he would gobble up a storm and keep their hearts pumping all morning, he would always hang up about 75 yards out and refuse to budge an inch closer. That morning they would beat him at his own game.

The son set up beside a large tree while his father backed off about 75 yards and began calling. To make a long story short, they had a rather unpleasant surprise for Boss Tom that morning.

If you find yourself up against a wily old gobbler, try this tag-team tactic. One note for safety: it's very important that hunters trying this technique communicate before the hunt and to set up some ground rules. Safety should be the top priority.
