No one knows the fields and forests of New York State better than hunters and trappers. That’s why they are being asked this hunting/trapping season, to help protect critical habitat and water sources by watching for abandoned gas and oil wells.
Hunters are asked to report abandoned, unsealed wells that lack identification or are in visibly poor condition.
These wells are dangerous to people, pets and wildlife and can leak, threatening aquifers, streams and ponds.
If a hunter locates an abandoned well, he or she is advised not to touch it, but instead to take photos and note GPS coordinates from a safe distance. At your earliest convenience, contact a DEC office and make the report by calling (585) 226-5376 or (716) 372-0645.
