A Little Help from His Friends

A Little Help from His Friends

Garden State deer drive results in three deer, including a dandy buck.

The New Jersey deer season has an extended permit season that continues from the regular six-day firearm season until January 31. The bag limit is one antlered and unlimited antlerless deer.

On Saturday, Jan. 19, on private farmland in Burlington County, seven members of our small hunting club got together to do some drives. Before dawn, the standers set up, and at first light we began the two-person drive.

We drivers saw deer immediately, so we attempted to steer them toward the standers and stop them from cutting back. It was successful, as we took three deer out of the drive, including a shooter buck (our club is trying to take only larger bucks).

On this day, it was club member, Sam Gephart of Bordentown, N.J., who was lucky enough to get a shot at an impressive 8-pointer. Sam made a great shot, and we all felt like we played a part in taking this great New Jersey buck.
