Danger Everywhere

Danger Everywhere

By Bob Humphrey

Deer fawns have to worry about predation, and a whole host of other dangers.

QUESTION:
I saw two fawns, but one of them had an unusual thing happening to both of its shoulders. Do you know what’s happening to this sweet animal?

ANSWER:
The best I can do is speculate based on the evidence provided. From the photos, the markings are most likely the result of some type of injury, either an abrasion or laceration. What’s more interesting is that the wounds occur on both sides in a relatively symmetrical pattern.

While it’s pure speculation on my part, it could be the result of an impact, perhaps trying to run through the narrow gap in fence or between two sharp-edged objects. Beyond that it’s hard to say, but deer are tough, and this little one already appears to be on the mend.
