Despite the hype, acorns and food plots make up only a portion of a deer's diet. Have you ever noticed how deer will browse green leaves as they move along through the woods? That browse can have a dramatic effect on deer travel patterns, especially in the fall as some plant species dry out and wither. If you really want to get a handle on your local deer patterns, learn what the deer like to browse -- and when. If you don't know plants very well, don't despair. Grab a few leaves you know the deer are eating and take them home with you. Look them up in a plant guide or even on the internet. Keep track of which plants the deer are eating throughout the season, and you'll know what to look for when setting up the following season -- and you'll know why deer moved and know where to move to if your sightings slack off.
