Clean up your act to slay a big buck
Ask a group of hunters what makes mature whitetails so difficult to hunt, and you'll hear plenty of answers. Some will point to intelligence. Others will mention eyesight, hearing, hunting pressure, or nocturnal movement patterns. While all of those factors play a role, none compare to the single greatest defense a deer possesses: its nose.
Because of this, hunters must think beyond simply remaining out of sight. Reducing human odor should be considered just as important as proper camouflage, stand placement, or shot execution. A deer cannot react to what it doesn't detect. The fewer human odor molecules present in a hunting area, the lower the likelihood that a deer will identify danger and alter its behavior.
This is why successful hunters focus on reducing odor before they ever enter the woods. Every effort made to limit human scent decreases the likelihood of educating deer and increases the odds of natural encounters. Human odor can never be eliminated entirely. The objective is to reduce it to a level that won’t trigger a deer's natural alarm system and send them on their way. Every step taken to limit odor helps increase your odds of success.
