See the Light

Find an easily accessible spot to store your headlamp.

Most whitetail hunters wear a headlamp into or out of the woods. Most also spend some frustrating minutes trying to locate said headlamp in a pack or pocket.

Try to get into the habit of always putting your headlamp in the same place when you take it off. It can be a particular pocket in your pack, or you can attach it to the top loop on the outside of your pack.

To do so without a clip, feed the strap halfway through the hanger loop on the top of the pack. Next, feed the lamp portion through the strap on the far side of the pack loop and pull it tight. Your headlamp will remain securely in place and super-easy to find when you want it.

One drawback to this technique is your headlamp can get bounced around a good bit as you walk and use your pack. It’s always a good idea to keep an extra light in your pack anyway, but especially so when hanging a headlamp in this fashion.

An added benefit is you can search in your pack in the dark and have the light actually inside the pack opening (while still attached to the pack loop), thereby remaining invisible to deer. It’s also possible to attach your headlamp in this way and let it hang into the pack, although if you do that you won’t be able to completely close the zipper.

Try a few different configurations and see which one works best for you.
