Antlerless deer permit lottery closes Aug. 1

Antlerless deer permit lottery closes Aug. 1

By Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife

Beginning in 2022, a licensed hunter with an antlerless deer permit can harvest an antlerless deer in the designated district and an antlered deer statewide.

Applications must be completed by Aug. 1 for the Sept. 1 drawing. There is no fee to apply to the antlerless deer permit lottery.

Antlerless deer permits are acquired through the lottery, and any remaining permits will be available for purchase on the MDIFW website.

Hunters may only supply the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife with one application for the lottery per year; if it is found that an applicant has applied more than one time in a year, that applicant will be disqualified.

After the lottery drawing Sept. 1, successful applicants must claim and purchase the permit for $12 (plus $2 agent fee) by Sept. 29. First come, first serve antlerless deer permits will be available on mefishwildlife.com early October.

Proceeds from the antlerless deer permit fee help fund the purchase and management of deer wintering areas (DWAs), primarily in northern Maine. Deer wintering areas are a critical habitat for white-tailed deer living at the northern end of their range.
