It’s in the Bag

It’s in the Bag

By Joe Palermo

Several years ago, I started carrying an ordinary household item that has proved itself valuable for a variety of hunting purposes: heavy-duty plastic garbage or leaf bags.

Initially, I used the bags to tote meat out of the woods. I’d quarter my deer and place the venison in them to keep dirt and leaves off the meat. This also kept blood off of me.

Soon, I discovered the bags had other hunting-related uses.

They are great to lie down on, should the need arise, for a quick nap or when taking photos.

If your ATV needs attention in the field, spread out a bag to press down grass and keep mud and insects off your legs and bottom.

And if you like to change into your hunting clothes after driving to your hunting property, use a bag to step on while changing shoes. No dirt, moisture or debris will stick to your socks.

Plastic bags also come in handy as a treestand seat-cushion cover. Slide one on to prevent your seat from getting wet from rain, snow or heavy dew. You’ll thank yourself the next time you hunt.

If a sudden rain comes, slice a hole in the bottom and sides and slide your head and arms through to keep your core dry.

You can even use plastic bags as a makeshift lean-to shelter in an emergency situation.

Make sure to get the 55-60 gallon, heavy duty, scent-free kind, preferably with strong handles.

If you keep 3 or 4 in your pack, I promise there will come a time when you’re glad you have them.
