Kansas newcomer wonders if the rut will impact gun season.

QUESTION: I’m new to east Kansas and would like to know when the rut happens in Miami County. The gun season for whitetails starts the 6th of December this year. – Bill

ANSWER: I recently completed a revision of the Buckmasters Rut Calendar, which gives rut dates for all states and will appear in the August issue of Buckmasters Whitetail Magazine. According to biologists from the Kansas Department of Parks, Wildlife and Tourism, peak rut is fairly consistent across the state and typically occurs around mid-November.

That will be a few weeks before gun season starts, but keep in mind any does not bred during the first rut will cycle again and come into estrus roughly four weeks later. Also, these are peak dates and there’s always a chance a doe may enter estrus well outside of the average.
